Liverpool may have ended Manchester City’s hopes of an invincible season yesterday as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran out 4-3 winners over Pep Guardiola’s side, but the German boss will surely harbour concerns over the performance of his defensive unit.
Three extremely cheap goals were conceded by a back line that did not include £75 million record signing Virgil van Dijk, and goalkeeper Loris Karius conceded a poor goal at his near post to hand the visitors an equaliser at Anfield. Going forward, the Reds looked devastating, and if Klopp can address their concerns at the back, then the club will surely begin to compete for the Premier League title in the near future.
Our landlord caught up with jubilant, but concerned fans after the final whistle, who are keen to see Klopp source a new goalkeeper this month. Karius was chosen over the equally calamitous Simon Mignolet, and all fans want is a shot stopper than can place their faith in, and they want Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel. Despite the Premier League winner being the son of Manchester United legend, Peter, the Scouse contingent here in The Tavern are confident that the Dane can solve their issues between the sticks. One of the most consistent goalkeepers in the division, Schmeichel would slot seamlessly into this Liverpool side, and provide the protection that fans crave.
If Klopp can convince Leicester to sell, and Schmeichel to join, then the 31-year-old could prove to be an excellent addition for at least the next four years. Rated at just £9m on Transfermarkt, the Danish international would go some way into making this Liverpool side the best in the country.
