The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are wondering who will become Leighton Baines’ successor at left back.
Baines has been a loyal and dependable defender for Everton for the past ten years now, racking up nearly 400 appearances for the Toffees. But, at the age of 33, he is approaching the back end of his career and the harsh reality is that Everton will need to start looking at younger players who can fill his boots.
In his absence this year, Everton have played Cuco Martina out of position at left back and it is clear that they will look to strengthen in that position by the summer at the latest, if not this January. Brendan Galloway and Luke Garbutt – the two young apprentices – do not look like they are ready to take over and Sam Allardyce could be forced into making a new signing.
If Everton are looking for a new left back this January, they should attempt to bring in Luke Shaw from Manchester United. Shaw is clearly not getting the game time he needs at Man United and Jose Mourinho is not a fan.
For the sake of his career, the seven cap England international needs a change of scenery to kick-start his career again. He showed so much potential when he broke through as a teenager at Southampton and we are sure that an experienced manager like Sam Allardyce will be able to harness that and turn Shaw into a better player.
Everton would probably be able to prise the 22-year-old away for a relatively cheap transfer fee and this could be a shrewd move for the future as he still has his best years ahead of him.
