Signing of £27m-rated defender would likely end Young’s career at Man Utd – agreed?

The defence has been an area of concern for the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern. It’s an area that, clearly, needs improving if the Red Devils are to compete at the top of the Premier League.

Fortunately, Jose Mourinho does apparently have plans to do just that at Old Trafford this summer, with the Guardian reporting that Danny Rose is a target ahead of next season.

Rose – who is rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt – has, of course, not had an easy season for Tottenham this term, but it’s fair to say that he could have a big impact at Old Trafford were he to move to the club. Indeed, you could even argue that his arrival would effectively end Ashley Young’s long-standing tenure at Old Trafford.

On his day, Rose is amongst the best defenders in Europe. Effective both defensively and offensively, he provides brilliant pace and energy down the left-hand side, and when making use of his brilliant left-foot, the Englishman can be a huge threat when driving into the opposition’s final third.

Defensively, his pace also works to his advantage, allowing him to often cut off attackers and slow them down with his effective tackling and strength.

What’s more, at 27-years-old, he’s in the prime of his career, and so Man Utd wouldn’t be investing in a short-term fix – he’d be able to man the left-hand side of the defence for a few years at the very least.

Ashley Young, you would think, could be a major casualty if Rose does depart. He’s been inconsistent this season, and the only reason he’s still at the club is  the lack of options at left-back. His offensive role is now non-existant, and so the arrival of Rose could shut the door on any prospect of a return.
