Signing this £20m-rated former PL winner would be a bigger signing for Arsenal that Mkhitaryan

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Arsene Wenger to invest heavily in his attack this month. The departure of Alexis Sanchez has left a sizeable gap in quality within the front-line at the Emirates, and whilst the arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan is – of course – huge, there is still a real need for further improvement.

However, the attack isn’t the only area of the Arsenal team that needs improvement. To the contrary, our landlord thinks that the defence is arguably an area that is requiring even more attention. After all, the Gunners have struggled at the back this term. With inconsistency plaguing their defensive regulars like Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin, it’s clear that the signing of a new defender could be just what they need.

Unsurprisingly, then, reports from the Telegraph linking the Gunners with a £20m move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans have gone down well in the Transfer Tavern. Indeed, one particularly passionate Arsenal fan has touted his potential arrival as the most significant of the month so far – and it’s tough to disagree.

After all, Evans provides exactly what Arsenal are looking for. Whilst inconsistency has been a problem for the Gunners this season, Evans has only gone from strength to strength. He has been one of the few shining lights in a West Brom side that has seriously struggled, displaying fantastic quality, leadership and determination – three traits that Arsene Wenger’s men have been lacking as of late.

Let’s not forget, too, that it’s not like Evans is an unproven, mid-table player. He’s a former Premier League winner with Man Utd, and whilst he eventually made the move down the league to West Brom, the qualities that allowed him to help the Red Devils win the Premier League remain.

Sure, he’s not a flashy signing like Mkhitaryan, but in terms of providing exactly what Wenger needs, Evans is just the ticket – and this signing cannot be undervalued if it gets done.
