Tottenham were back to winning ways last Saturday after beating Brighton 2-1 at the Amex.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men had lost three games on the bounce following defeats against Liverpool, Inter Milan and tonight’s opponents in the third round of the Carabao Cup, Watford.
But thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Erik Lamela, the club were able to end their losing run on the south coast, and the latter of the two goalscorers on that day will now be pushing for a start versus Watford at Stadium MK.
Since arriving at Tottenham from AS Roma back in 2013, £18m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Lamela has had both his critics and injury problems.
However, Pochettino remains a huge fan of his compatriot, and the 26-year-old has shown exactly why in Tottenham’s last couple of league games.
Along with his goals against Liverpool and Brighton, when brought on, Lamela has, overall, added bit more of a spark and invention to the team.
The Argentina international is capable of dribbling past players and often takes up dangerous positions in the half spaces where he is able to cause defenders trouble.
Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are the attacking midfielders who will get all the praise for what they deliver in the final third. But in Lamela, you get something a little bit different and if he can remain fit, there is no doubt he is a player Pochettino will look towards this season.
And tonight’s League Cup clash against Watford presents a good opportunity for Lamela to stake a claim for a first-team place going forward in a game he can easily win for Tottenham based on his current form.
