The World Cup was quite the event, particularly if you are an England fan. The Three Lions were very impressive during their stint over in Russia, and the stock of many of Gareth Southgate’s players has undoubtedly risen in recent weeks as we head into the business end of the transfer window.
Given their form, it seems likely that Jose Mourinho and Man Utd was impressed by many of the players that turned out for England, and perhaps he had an eye on spotting a few potential targets.
There were many standout performers at the World Cup across the board, but Man Utd would struggle to find a better target than England ace Harry Maguire.
The Red Devils are lacking defensive quality at present, and if Jose Mourinho is going to improve one position this term, centre-half is where his attention must be – and Maguire would be the perfect option.
Maguire quickly became a cult-hero amongst England fans, and it’s easy to see why. The 25-year-old delivered consistently brilliant performances for the team, with his aerial presence, passing ability and general solidity at the back reigning supreme. He also popped up with a goal for his country, which was a testament to his importance under Gareth Southgate.
There’s a lack of a physical presence like Maguire at Old Trafford, and so he’d be a natural fit. It’s important not to forget that he’s also proven in the Premier League. Whilst he rose to prominence for England, he was dominant for Leicester City last season too, and so a step up to Man Utd would very much be a natural one for him.
Man Utd have a rich history of utilising strong powerful defenders, and based on his World Cup performances, Maguire deserves to be their next.
