Sir Alex Has United Scouting, ‘The Next Cristiano Ronaldo’

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Porto’s young Colombian winger James Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was in Manchester this week as his Porto side were dumped out of Europe by United’s cross town rivals Manchester City. O Jogo reports that Man United scouts were present at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night to run the rule over Rodriguez ahead of a possible summer move for the Porto attacker.

Rodriguez, 20, is one of the brightest young talents currently playing in Europe and comparisons have even been made with a young Cristiano Ronaldo. Since arriving at Porto from Argentine club Banfield in 2010, Rodriguez has gone on to cement his place in a team that went undefeated in the league and won the Europa Cup last season.

Even though it has been hard to emulate the success that Andre Villas Boas brought Porto last season, Rodriguez has gone on to have a solid season with him registering 9 goals in 13 league games from a wide position.

With the vultures circling overhead it seems as if Porto will be prepared to let Rodriguez depart in the summer if they receive the right offer. Italian giants Juventus were said to be interested in Rodriguez’s services before he joined Porto but a deal could not be completed because the youngster did not have an EU passport.

Sir Alex Ferguson has a good track record of signing young players from the Portuguese Primeira Liga and developing them into genuine stars.  Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson were all brought from Portugal at tender ages and have all gone on to enjoy much success at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has in recent years embarked on a policy of bringing in the finest young talent with the likes of Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all being brought in to accompany United’s established stars. A move for Rodriguez would keep with this policy as Fergie tries to maintain the freshness and hunger in his Man United squad.

There is fierce competition in the wide areas currently for United and Rodriguez would be far from guaranteed first team football with the likes of Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young all being in good form. Yet, Rodriguez is a prodigious talent and if given time to find his feet and the right tutelage he may develop into one of the best players in Europe.
