Manchester United are looking to sign Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated Spanish Under-21 defender Alvaro Dominguez as a long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.
Dominguez, 22, has been a regular in the Atletico side in the past two years and has caught the eye of several clubs with his commanding performances for the Spanish side. He was at the heart of the Atletico side that won the Europa League two years ago and the club know they will have trouble hanging onto him.
United defender Rio Ferdinand has been troubled by injuries over the last year and a half and Sir Alex Ferguson knows that the defender’s days as at the top are coming to an end and he may not be able to play full seasons anymore, which has prompted him to search for a long-term successor to the England international.
Ferguson has raided Atletico Madrid once already this summer by signing their young goalkeeper David De Gea and he is now reportedly ready to return to the Spanish side with an offer for De Gea’s ex team mate Dominguez.
But with the transfer window now closed, Fergie may wait until January, or more likely, the summer to snap up the younsgter. The United manager has made it his priority to bring through young players at the club from now on. He has introduced Danny Wellbeck, Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling and of course David De Gea this season so far. Alvaro Dominguez could potentially be the next young star to join that crop soon.
