One of those transfer stories that refuses to die, its back again and it looks like it could be dragging its feet well into the Summer. Maybe if you have been living in a bunker for a while you may have missed this one, but luckily for you its back in the press again today. Italian sport paper Corriere dello Sport claims that scouts from Manchester United were present to watch the player perform for Napoli this week, as well as representitives from a few of Europes other biggest clubs.
Hamsik started his career in his native Slovakia before he moved to Serie A at 17 years of age in 2004 signing for Brescia in a deal worth £420,000. He stayed with the side for 2 seasons, the second of which was in Serie B where he was particularly effective. At the end of that campaign, the winger was on the move again this time signing for newly promoted Napoli for £4.6million and he was once again a Serie A player. It has been with Napoli that the player has demonstrated how good his game is, and what a threat he is to defending teams. Now in his 4th season with the club, he has played 150 games and scored 44 goals.
He can play on either wing, but ideally through the middle and he is known for his goal scoring threat. He has been compared to Frank Lampard and more importantly Paul Scholes, he is a box to box midfielder with bags of energy who has a nack of cropping up just outside or inside the penalty area unmarked to slot home.
The hard working player has been watched by many clubs including United rivals Manchester City. The Italian press however report that last week it was scouts from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona that were present to watch him play for Napoli.
Of all the clubs that have shown interest in the Slovakian, it is Manchester United that have shown the most desire to sign him. The hierarchy at Old Trafford view the player as a long term replacement for Paul Scholes and they are aware how pressing it is to bring in new attacking talent to the central area of their midfield.
The signing would undoubtedly be a great addition to the United squad, Hamsik in many ways is exactly what the team need. They sometimes lack a spark centrally, and he could provide that. With the space created by the movement of Rooney, Berbatov and Nani I can see Hamsik potentially scoring lots of goals for United with his talent for appearing in space unmarked.
The move would probably be an expensive one to get through, Napoli have no interest in selling the player and with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Manchester City also considering moves for the energetic Slovakian it could be a particularly drawn out process. The player has also made it clear in the past that he wants to achieve things with Napoli so he may also be a bit reticent about moving at this stage in his career.
Either way this is one of those stories that has been around for a dogs age, and shows no real sign of coming to a conclusion, I am almost certain that bids will be put forward for the player this Summer, but whether they will be enough to convince Napoli to sell him remains to be seen.
