Manchester United fans still taunt Liverpool supporters with the name of Diego Forlan, even though the striker swapped England for Spain 7 years ago, well now it appears that Forlan might be about to make a sensational return.
We have a particularly intriguing rumour today brought to us by our friends at the Mail and they suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson could be lining up a ridiculous swoop for his former misfiring forward, Diego Forlan.
A rearrangement of the following words would best sum up Forlan’s spell at Old Trafford ‘hit, a, door, with, banjo, barn, couldn’t, a’ however since his move to La Liga, the Uruguayan striker has proved that he is a real goal scoring threat at the highest level. He left Old Trafford and signed for Villareal where he spent 3 seasons and had an impressive record of 54 goals in 106 games, his form in La Liga made him extremely desirable and he moved to Atletico Madrid, where now in his fourth season he has scored 74 goals in 127 games.
There have often been rumours about Forlan returning to England, his record across his career is impeccable, however that huge blip on his CV is that spell with Manchester United. During his time at Old Trafford, the Uruguyan appeared in 98 games and netted just 17 goals.
It has been Tottenham who have reportedly been closest to signing the player, they made a move in January offering £17million, only to be rebuffed by Madrid. However, according to the Mail, a recent falling out between player and manager, Quique Sanchez Flores, is pushing him towards the exit door, and the same reports claim that he could now be available for as little as £9million, now that IS bargain basement prices.
Sir Alex Ferguson, currently has 3 strikers at his disposal, Rooney, Berbatov and Hernandez (no, I am not including Owen as a United forward!), and with their being numerous reports recently about the future of Bulgarian Berbatov, a new striker this Summer would not be out of the question. I am however, unsure about how likely it is that Sir Alex would give Forlan a second spell in England football. Clearly he has ability, and he never lacked in terms of effort, but he simply did not look like he was capable of being a prolific goal scorer in England.
It is of course a possibility, that he has learnt and developed a lot more in the elapsing period, and I suppose at £9million it may not represent too much of a gamble, but don’t they say that you should never go back?
News of this fall out will greatly interest Harry Redknapp and Tottenham as they look to find a solution to their goal scoring problems and they too could launch a renewed bid to land the 31 year old forward.
Should this news of a fallout be proved accurate, I am sure that there will be many clubs interested, some of which will definitely be in England, but personally I just can’t see Forlan back at Old Trafford, there again, did any of you ever think that you would see Michael Owen wearing a United shirt in his career? Stranger things have happened!
