Youth starlet, John Cofie. The 17-year-old striker is really making waves in United’s Under-18 team and the fans love him.
Ghanian Cofie is a tall and powerful striker who is not afraid to shoot. He managed 8 goals in 9 games at both reserve and youth level by the end of September this year and his prowess has not gone un-noticed. SAF has made public claims regarding his ability and praised the quality of his upcoming strikeforce.
Cofie was first scouted by Championship side Burnley at a football tournament in Germany, but it wasn’t long before big clubs we’re jumping over themselves to get his signature early. Chelsea and Liverpool both placed large bids, but it was local rivals United that secured Cofie’s services.
Fergie signed the Ghanaian at only 14 years old for a fee reported to be over £250’000; a staggering amount for such a young player. Burnley had rejected similar bids, but it was only after Cofie refused to train they had to admit defeat. The Lancashire outfit however did secure first refusal on any loan deals regarding the player and a 25% sell-on clause in the deal; a savvy move.
Looking to the future, Cofie is eligible to play for three national sides – Ghana, Germany or England. A sigh of relief for us English folk is that he chose the latter and has been called up for international duty at youth level several times.
If Cofie can keep up his form, despite his young age, I could see Fergie bringing him on late on against lower end cup competition. It would be a great opportunity to really see what the lad can do when faced with real pros.
Time will tell.
