Newcastle United supporters have been relatively satisfied in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side clinch a decent point from their trip to Crystal Palace last time out, thus edging a point closer to Premier League safety.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles off the back of drawing 1-1 at home to Burnley in their preceding league outing, a result which extended their winless streak in the league to three matches. And that soon became four as although they took the lead at Selhurst Park through midfielder Mo Diame, the home side levelled just ten minutes into the second half courtesy of Luka Milivojevic’s penalty, thus leaving both sides having to settle for a share of the spoils.
Consequently, there have been many satisfied Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from Sky Sports, which details journalist Keith Downie’s thoughts on where they are at with regards to the potential takeover of the North East giants.
Owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale back in October, just days after businesswoman Amanda Staveley was seen at St James’ Park taking in their 1-1 draw with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Yet things haven’t progressed greatly since then with Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners failing with a bid for Newcastle, which Ashley reportedly labelled a ‘waste of time’ to suggest that he is no closer to relinquishing his ownership of the club.
However, Sky Sports journalist Downie says that he ‘can see’ a possible takeover bid ‘revived’ at the end of the season, on the basis that Benitez is able to keep the club in the Premier League, and Staveley makes an improved offer.
And with the Magpies only a point clear of the bottom three at present, it very much remains to be seen whether they can indeed stay up, and thus increase the prospects of a resurrected takeover bid in the close season.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United has been up for sale since October, yet four months on and Mike Ashley remains the club’s owner, much to the frustration of Magpies fans up and down the country.
Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners have reportedly made an offer for the North East giants in the last few months only to be knocked back by Ashley, who labelled the negotiations as a ‘waste of time’.
Yet Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie isn’t ruling out a takeover happening in the future, as he ‘can see’ a possible deal being ‘revived’ in the summer were Newcastle to stay in the Premier League, and Staveley to improve her offer.
And while Newcastle supporters are likely to be encouraged by these remarks, it very much remains to be seen whether these two things do indeed happen.
