Arsenal’s need to replace Aaron Ramsey this year is a factor which is bound to influence the recruitment policy of Sven Mislintat and Unai Emery in the coming months, but a recent report suggests that they’re looking in all the right places.
The loss of a player of Ramsey’s importance will naturally be giving Emery cause for concern moving forward. Replacing such a well established character is verging on impossible, and Arsenal’s next major decision in the transfer market will need to be fuelled by long-term, progressive and meticulous thinking.
With Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi both occupying deeper lying midfield roles, Arsenal will need to focus on bringing in a natural box-to-box midfielder to replace the Wales international.
Well, according to Sky Italy’s Ghilda Pensante, who was speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast on Wednesday, the club have already shown a strong interest in one of the most gifted box-to-box midfielders on the continent, Nicolo Barella.
Chelsea have been credited with interest in the 21-year-old Italy international since the window reopened for business, but Pensante has claimed that Arsenal are showing a stronger interest.
“Sarri and Chelsea really likes the player, but the Premier League club that we know has been showing more interest in him is Arsenal”
Considering the enormity of Barella’s potential and the quality he has showcased in Serie A, Arsenal supporters should be rubbing their hands together at the prospect of welcoming him to the club.
In the modern era box-to-box midfielders are something of a dying breed, but Barella is a player who naturally occupies that role, simultaneously balancing defensive responsibilities with a natural desire to break through the lines with the ball at his feet, constantly seeking ways to unsettle the opponent.
The likes of Fabio Capello and Andrea Pirlo have eulogised about Cagliari’s crown jewel, and it would have to be regarded as a coup for the Gunners if they are able to fend off competition from across Europe to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.
