Liverpool aren’t a team that, over the years, has been known for their brilliant approach to signing players. Indeed, for a while, the Reds made a habit of overpaying for overrated talent, and that left them treading water. Players like Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing failed to have much of an impact at Anfield, and that was a familiar theme for a while.
However, under Jurgen Klopp, that’s all changed. Indeed, the Reds have transformed over the last few years, with fantastic signings coming in and transforming the club’s fortunes as a result.
It’s no surprise that with the influx of top quality talent, the Reds have become one of the more competitive sides in England, and this season under Klopp, they’re looking to challenge for the Premier League title.
And according to Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson, achieving that aim will cement one of the Reds’ big money arrivals as one of the best ever.
As per Sky Sports, Thompson said: ‘I think Virgil van Dijk has to be made Player of the Year. With Liverpool top of the league, it is real value for how he has played.’
He added: ‘He has been absolutely fantastic. If they can win the league, it will be one of the buys of the century, but he has been the most consistent.’
Van Dijk has been a regular at Anfield, and something changed the moment he moved to Liverpool just over 12 months ago. For years, the Reds had struggled defensively, with a lack of consistency really proving to be Klopp’s downfall.
That all changed overnight, though. Van Dijk immediately had a huge impact, solidifying the defence and adding some much-needed leadership to a team that has lacked it for a long time.
In many ways, he was the missing piece in Jurgen Klopp’s puzzle, and whilst the German has continued to improve his team since; nobody has offered quite the monumental change that van Dik did.
Certainly, there aren’t many players that can be in the conversation when it comes to being the best ever signings – but based on what he’s done over the last year or so, van Dijk is definitely up there.
