Sky Sports pundit: This is why Tottenham will not beat Man City on Saturday

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s clash with Man City this weekend. Having picked up two wins from two over the last week, confidence and optimism are at an all-time high amongst our resident Lilywhites.

However, it doesn’t appear as though that confidence is unanimous when it comes to Tottenham, with Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson pouring cold water onto Tottenham’s chances as part of his Premier League predictions column.

Backing Man City to win the game, Merson writes: “If Tottenham had their best team out they would give them a game but I don’t think they will do it with the defenders they have out”.

“Toby Alderweireld is probably the best defender in the world in my opinion and he is badly missed. And Davinson Sanchez is out along with Victor Wanyama, so they are missing big players”, he adds.

It’s certainly a fair point from Merson. Tottenham’s defence hasn’t really been challenged over the last week, with wins against Stoke City and Brighton respectively, and so this will be an entirely new test for the Lilywhites.

Whether they’re up to the challenge remains to be seen, but the task will be made significantly harder by the absence of so many important players. Both Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld, in particular, are surefire starters under Pochettino, and so it won’t be easy for the Argentine to replace them.

Landlord’s Verdict

Man City are in fine form, and that’s a problem for Tottenham.

Pochettino is lacking some key players at an important time, and that could cost his side.

That said, they’re just as good as City on their day, so they can’t be ruled out.
