There’s a big summer coming up for Manchester United as they seek to close the gap on runaway Premier League leaders and rivals Manchester City.
Manager Jose Mourinho will once again know funds are available for him to go out and add some world class players to his squad, and a full summer of working with January signing Alexis Sanchez will be another bonus for the Red Devils.
However, here in the Tavern, our landlord thinks that the club will also be looking to move a few players on, and there are one or two in the Man United squad who he believes need to be looking over their shoulder, and could even be in direct competition with each other for a place in the squad.
For United, two players who fall into this category are defenders Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling, who have both played bit parts this season and been in and out of the team as Mourinho has preferred other options.
While at the moment they are getting game time, the injuries to Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are a massive factor in this, and with Victor Lindelof also getting time on the pitch, there simply isn’t room for all of them at Old Trafford.
Rojo, at 27, will be entering what should be his prime years, while Smalling, now 28, is in a similar boat. While any move in England will be seen as a step down, both players will be desperate to play more first team football next term, which means we could well see one, or both of these central defenders on the move come the summer.
