Summer signing Lucas Torreira was handed his first Arsenal start of the season in the Gunners’ 4-2 Europa League win over Vorskla Poltava on Thursday, and the Uruguayan certainly made an impression before being taken off injured.
While Vorskla Poltava are not the hardest of opposition Arsenal will come up against this campaign, Torreira’s display was still a promising one, and manager Unai Emery has previously praised the stability the £27m-rated (via Transfermarkt) 22-year-old has provided the team despite having only been used as a substitute prior to Thursday.
“I am very happy with Matteo and also very happy with Lucas, but maybe in the second half we needed a little more balance on the pitch with the positioning,” Emery told Arsenal’s official club website after his side’s 2-1 win against Newcastle United last weekend. “Lucas gives us this balance,” the Arsenal boss added.
Delving into Emery’s words, it is surprising Torreira does not have more minutes under his belt, although that may not be a notion all Arsenal fans agree with. Ahead of the Gunners’ Europa League group stage opener, Transfer Tavern asked supporters of the north London club was Emery making the correct call by deciding to integrate Torreira slowly.
And 55% of voters think yes compared to the 45% who believe Torreira should have featured more by now.
Nevertheless, in Torreira, the Gunners have a midfielder who looks capable of providing the team with a bit more protection from the middle of the park, and it is likely to be only a matter of time before Emery gives the former Sampdoria man more first-team opportunities.
