Snubbed, though Arsenal shouldn’t get too down about reported transfer blow

Arsenal fans haven’t been able to leave the Transfer Tavern due to the amount of transfer news coming in.

Arsenal fans will be optimistic for the new season due to the signings the club have made. There are a few areas that need to be strengthened ahead of the new season and although Emery has started the summer off well, there is still plenty to be done. Unfortunately, not all of Arsenal’s transfers will bear fruit as apparently Ever Banega is set to reject a move to the Gunners.

The Breakdown

Unai Emery is on the hunt for a creative midfielder. The Spaniard is keen to add a midfielder who can bring the attack together up front. Ever Banega had been identified as a potential target for Emery but according to Marca via the Metro, the Argentinian midfielder has rejected a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal are close to signing Lucas Torreira but Emery had wanted to Banega to bolster the club’s midfield options. With a restricted transfer budget, Banega was seen as a cheap and practical addition to the squad. The midfielder reportedly has a release clause of £17.6 million but could not be tempted away from Sevilla.

The Argentinian had worked with Emery during their time at Sevilla but following an unsuccessful spell at Inter Milan, the midfielder was wary of making the same mistake away.

Although it would’ve been a smart piece of business, with Ozil at 10 and if Arsenal bring in Torreira, there probably wouldn’t have been a place for the Argentine operator in the starting XI. Arsenal do need to add some depth to the squad but they can still do that and probably for less than Banega would’ve cost.
