It’s clear that Liverpool have to fix their goalkeeping situation this summer. Neither Loris Karius or Simon Mignolet have done enough to indicate that they’re good enough to be the men between the sticks for Liverpool, and so a replacement is needed.
Liverpool have been blessed with some incredible ‘keepers over the years, and Pepe Reina was up there with the best of them. Indeed, they’re yet to really replace the Spaniard with someone of such quality, and so when looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, they must keep him in mind.
Fortunately, our landlord thinks that in Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, the Reds would get more than a few flashbacks of Reina.
Like Reina, McCarthy is a very solid goalkeeper, and he’s proven his quality this season in the Premier League. He’s displaced Fraser Forster as their first choice option, and that’s a testament to just how good he has been.
Reina was known for his shot-stopping, athleticism and consistency, and over the last six months, McCarthy has shown all of those traits and more. You could argue that he’s been one of the Premier League’s best since the turn of the year, and so he has certainly earned any comparisons with Reina.
He’s rated at just £2.25 million by Transfer Markt, and so like Reina, he could go down as a relative bargain when it’s all said and done.
Granted, it will take a lot for him to step up and emulate the success of Liverpool’s Spanish legend, but the Englishman is more than good enough to make an impact to a similar degree.
