Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has only been at Old Trafford for a number of days, but the Norweigan already has a lot on his plate. He's got to turn the Man Utd team around very quickly, whilst he's also got the prospect of the January transfer window on the horizon.

January could prove to be a crucial window for the Red Devils, as there are evidently more than a few failings within the current squad that Jose Mourinho was unable to improve during his tenure.

One area that undeniably needs some attention is the defence, and if Solskjaer is to stand any chance of keeping the job beyond the end of the season, he needs to sort the problems at the back out.

This is something that Mourinho struggled with. He was unable to improve the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, whilst his signings - namely Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof - have both, thus far, failed to live up to expectations.

That said, the tools that he's been working with are hardly the sharpest in the shed. Between Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcus Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, Man Utd's current crop of players aren't even close to the level of many of their rivals.

Granted, in the case of the signings, Mourinho is at fault, and that's where Solskjaer must improve. In January, signing a top-class defender, with proven ability in England, is essential.

He can't afford to build a top side without a brilliant foundation, otherwise, he'll face the same fate as his predecessors.
