Solving problems: Guardiola could make Man City unstoppable with this one change

Man City’s season so far has been decent, and they’re still keeping pace near the top of the table, but it hasn’t been without issues. An injury to Kevin De Bruyne, in particular, has caused problems, with the Belgium star one of Man City’s best players.

That said, it hasn’t impacted upon results all too much so far. Barring one draw, City have kept winning in the English top flight, and given the competition that they are likely to face over the course of the season, it was important that they impressed.

With Kevin De Bruyne injured, though, Guardiola has a big task on his hands to keep Man City as impressive as they were last season. That won’t be easy, given what De Bruyne offers.

However, in Riyad Mahrez, the Citizens could have a solution.

Granted, Mahrez has played a decent amount of football for City this season, but he could serve as the ideal replacement for De Bruyne in the Man City midfield. Playing slightly deeper and more central, Mahrez would be able to make the most of his passing¬†range and dribbling, instead of being forced out wide as he has been at points so far this season. It’s not his natural position, but it wasn’t De Bruyne’s either, and it has been hugely effective with the Belgian.

Mahrez is best-utilised when he’s got players ahead of him. He’s a fantastic finisher and goalscorer, of course, but he’s also a tremendous passer and his vision is, like De Bruyne, deadly. He’s a natural replacement for the Belgian then.

Pep Guardiola must consider utilising the Algerian in this role, then, as it could mean that Man City do not miss their Belgian maestro over the coming weeks. He’s made just 2 Premier League starts so far this season, and that needs to change.
