A number of huge changes have come at Chelsea so far since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri. However, with the first few games of the season now done and dusted, the Italian has settled into a routine of sorts. He appears to have selected his preferred formation and personnel, and that has worked well thus far.
However, going forward, he still has a major problem. Chelsea’s main striker, Alvaro Morata, has yet to really fire so far this season, with just one goal scored so far.
Given that the players around him are impressing, with both Eden Hazard and Pedro having been prolific so far this term, the prospect of adding a potent forward to the mix should be mouthwatering for the Blues.
If Chelsea were able to add a lethal striker to the mix, then, they’d be in a great spot – and fortunately, they already have one at the club.
We are, of course, referring to Olivier Giroud. Fresh off the back of a World Cup winning summer with France, the forward has yet to feature much for the Blues this term, but he was lethal last season.
He bagged an impressive 3 league goals for Chelsea last season after joining the club from Arsenal in January, and he regularly filled in for Alvaro Morata, given the Spaniard’s failure to find the net. He was a frequent member of the first team through a number of competitions, including their winning FA cup run.
He offers something very different to Morata. Whilst the Spaniard is more technical, Giroud is far more powerful and combative going forward, and that makes him a real menace for opposing defenders. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have technical ability, indeed he’s impressed with the ball at his feet at Chelsea, but he’s just got more strings to his bow than Morata. Not to mention, his goalscoring record is proven over the last few years.
For Chelsea, then, he could have an impact. He’ll be able to link up with thee lethal players around him, and Sarri may finally find a potent goalscorer too.
