Southampton and West Ham seeking deal to end goal-scoring woes – report

Southampton and West Ham supporters have been particularly downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with the Saints losing 3-0 at Liverpool last time out while David Moyes’ first game in charge of the Hammers ended in a 2-0 defeat against Watford.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton went into their clash with the Merseyside giants having won just one of their previous six Premier League games, and they weren’t able to improve that run at Anfield either as a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as Philippe Coutinho’s strike sealed a comfortable victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side. And things weren’t any better for Moyes’ West Ham as goals either side of half time from Will Hughes and Richarlison secured a 2-0 win for Marco Silva’s Watford on Sunday, leaving the Hammers in the Premier League’s bottom three after 12 games of the campaign.

Thus, there have been many despondent supporters from both clubs in the Tavern this week, but they may well be encouraged by a recent report from Tutto Udinese, which suggests that the Premier League duo, alongside other top-flight clubs, are interested in landing former Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

The 28-year-old currently plays his trade in the Chinese Super League with Changchun Yatai and has done so since January, and he has seriously impressed with 15 goals in just 27 games for the club in their run to eighth place in the division.

Yet the Nigeria international is best known to English football fans for his stint at Watford between 2014 and 2017, in which time Ighalo scored 40 goals in just 100 games, including 16 in his first Premier League campaign back in 2015/16 to help the Hornets to 13th place in the top tier.

And although he managed one goal in his last 18 league matches for Watford, it appears that several top-flight sides liked what they saw of Ighalo, as reports suggest that Southampton and West Ham, alongside Everton and Stoke City, are lining up a move for the forward.

But whether any of the aforementioned quartet are able to stump up the fee and wages to lire the forward back to England very much remains to be seen.

Landlord’s verdict: Southampton and West Ham have seriously struggled for goals so far this season, having managed just 20 goals between them in their 24 Premier League games combined, five of which came in the meeting between the two sides back in August.

So reports that they are after former Watford striker Odion Ighalo aren’t overly surprising, even if the Nigeria international endured a troublesome final few months at Vicarage Road before moving to the Chinese Super League back in January.

But with 16 goals in his first Premier League campaign back in 2015/16, the 28-year-old clearly has pedigree at top-flight level, and with the Saints and the Hammers in dire need of striking reinforcements, both for the rest of this season and beyond, it’s a move both could seek to make in the coming windows.
