Southampton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side concede a late leveller to end up drawing 2-2 away at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash in Hertfordshire off the back of a 1-0 FA Cup success over Championship side Fulham, yet winless in the league in their preceding nine games. But the Saints looked on course for a first Premier League victory since November as a brace from James Ward-Prowse propelled them into a commanding position against the Hornets, only for the visitors to concede twice in the second half, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s equaliser coming in the final minute and very much in controversial circumstances.
Thus, there has been much negativity among our resident Southampton fans in the Tavern this week, although they are likely to be encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail’s Live Blog on Tuesday (12.56pm), which suggests that they have ‘asked’ Atletico Madrid about the possibility of signing striker Kevin Gameiro.
The 30-year-old made the move to the Spanish capital back in 2016 and has since gone on to bag 22 goals in just 63 games for the club, including six in 17 matches this time round to help Diego Simeone’s side to second place in La Liga.
However, the arrival of Diego Costa earlier this month has called into question Gameiro’s future at the Wanda Metropolitano, and recent reports suggest that Southampton, alongside Crystal Palace and Swansea City, have ‘asked’ about the forward’s availability ahead of a possible move come January 31.
And while reports suggest that a move to Southampton is unlikely, what with Atletico seemingly unwilling to sell and Gameiro holding out for a ‘top six’ club, if the Saints were to meet his reported £25 million, it could open the door for a possible deal to take place come the end of the month.
Landlord’s verdict: It’s been well documented that Southampton need reinforcements in January, with the attacking department particularly in need of strengthening if they are to remain in the Premier League.
And it appears that manager Mauricio Pellegrino recognises that as recent reports suggest that his side have ‘asked’ about the possibility to signing Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, who faces an uncertain time in the Spanish capital following the arrival of fellow forward Diego Costa.
It may be tough luring the 30-year-old to St Mary’s, what with Atletico reportedly unwilling to sell and the player holding out for something better, but if the Saints were to meet his reported £25 million valuation, it’s a deal which could well take place in the next fortnight.
