Aston Villa could be about to raid Southampton again following their capture of Matt Targett.
Targett joined the newly-promoted Premier League side in a reported £11m deal earlier this week and, according to the Daily Mirror (via Daily Echo), he could soon be reunited with former team-mate Jack Stephens at Villa Park.
The outlet reports that Southampton are on the lookout for a new central defender this summer, which could pave the way for Stephens to leave, with Aston Villa said to be interested in the 25-year-old’s services.
With the Saints said to be in the market for a centre-back and considering the options they already have, they can surely afford to lose Stephens this summer.
Last season, statistically, the former England U21 international was inferior to his rivals in that centre-half position.
For example, when it came to tackles made per game in the Premier League, Stephens fells short compared to Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek.
While Vestergaard managed to average 2.3 and Bednarek 1.6, Stephens made 1. As for interceptions, the Southampton academy graduate also ranked below two of his defensive team-mates (as per WhoScored).
While he did manage to average the same amount per game as Vestergaard (1.5), Bednarek (2.8) and Maya Yoshida (2.5) performed better in that area. And for clearances made per game, it is also a similar theme.
Ultimately, with three central defenders who all look better on paper at disposal, it is probably fair to say Ralph Hasenhuttl would not miss Stephens too much if he does end up departing St. Mary’s.
