Besiktas are thought to be the only club showing a ‘real’ interest in Southampton’s wantaway midfielder Mario Lemina, according to Turkish newspaper Sabah.
The Super Lig giants are on the verge of losing their current central midfielder, Gary Medel, to Serie A side Bologna (via SportsWitness), so are reportedly eyeing Lemina as the Chilean’s replacement in a possible loan move.
AS Monaco had also been keen on the Gabon international, however, with the French side loaning Leicester City midfielder Adrien Silva for the season, they are now not thought to be interested in the 25-year-old.
Besiktas manager Abdullah Avci is thought to be a huge fan of Lemina, who joined Southampton from Juventus in 2017, and believes that he could be the turning point for the Turkish club this season.
The Black Eagles have started their campaign inconsistently, losing their opening league game 3-0 against Sivasspor, before inflicting the same scoreline on Goztepe in their second match last Friday.
Gary Medel lined up for Besiktas in that win over Goztepe, but it could well have been his final contribution for the club as talks continue to advance with Bologna over his potential move to Italy.
Last season, Lemina averaged 2.3 tackles per game and had an average pass success rate of 86% in the Premier League, so is clearly a player of great quality on his day. To add some context, no Southampton midfielder averaged a higher pass success rate (via WhoScored).
A fresh start in the Turkish Super Lig, though, could be just what he needs to reignite his career, with the former Juventus man seemingly not in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans.
