Saints were thrashed 9-0 by Leicester City last Friday during an all-round humiliating evening at St Mary’s, before losing 3-1 to Manchester City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Funnily enough, that result at the Etihad was actually viewed as a positive one considering what went before, with Saints at least managing to grab a late consolation goal for the travelling support to cheer on.
However, the south coast club face another daunting trip to Greater Manchester on Saturday, this time in the Premier League when City boss Pep Guardiola is unlikely to rest any of his biggest hitters as he did in the cup on in midweek.
Nicholas believes that another drubbing is on the horizon for the visitors, but doesn’t think that Ralph Hasenhuttl should have any concerns regarding the safety of his job.
“Should Ralph Hasenhuttl be under pressure? No and don’t think he is,” said the former Scotland international (via Sky Sports).
“It is one of the weekends where Southampton will wonder what to do. They will want to get over the line without being too embarrassed,” he added.
“If Southampton want to counter-attack and sit in then so be it, City will welcome it. It is another hammering incoming.”
Nicholas is correct when he says that Hasenhuttl shouldn’t feel too under pressure at this stage.
Friday’s result was embarrassing – there’s no other word for it – though it was the team who let the Austrian down with a spineless performance against the Foxes.
Hasenhuttl is a proven manager, having led RB Leipzig into the Champions League, for instance; if Saints were to sack him, it would most likely prove to be a terrible mistake in the long run.
