The Southampton fans who are gathered around the jukebox in The Transfer Tavern this evening, are discussing reports that the club are closing in on a new goalkeeper.
According to a report in the print edition of the Sun via the Croydon Advertiser, the South Coast Premier League side are closing in on a £2 million deal to bring Crystal Palace goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to St Mary’s.
Southampton are in the market for a new goalkeeper to put pressure on current number one Fraser Forster, with both Maarten Stekelenberg and Kelvin Davis departing the club this summer.
McCarthy’s time at Selhurst Park is set to come to an end, with the club currently having four top class goalkeepers in their ranks they feel the need to move at least one on and that one appears to be the 26 year old.
McCarthy only joined Palace last summer for a fee of £3.5 million from Crystal Palace, but has found starts limited and made just seven appearances for the club last term.
Our regular Saints fans think this would be an astute bit of business, and hope the keeper can replicate the form he showcased whilst at former club Reading.
