There are some sensational reports coming into the Football Transfer Tavern as news breaks that Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese has resigned to plunge the Premier League club into chaos.
The future of manager Mauricio Pochettino now looks uncertain after he stated that he would be the first to follow Cortese out of the club if he left.
That fact leaves a host of today’s newspapers suggesting that this uncertainty could see an exodus of star players from St. Mary’s.
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea have now sensed an opportunity to lure Luke Shaw away from the troubled club in a £20 million deal.
The 18-year-old is regarded as the Saints most sought-after talent and he has been repeatedly linked with a move to his boyhood club Chelsea.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho is searching for a young, talented left back to replace Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge and Shaw fits the bill. He is understood to keen on a new challenge, especially with his mentor Pochettino expected to depart.
The daughter of original Saints investor Markus Liebherr will take over the daily running of the club, which is concerning for the Saints supporters in the tavern, given her lack of experience of running a football club.
With Pochettino set to join Cortese in walking out of the club, that could see their star players reconsidering their futures with the south coast side.
The England Under-21 international, who has also been targeted by Manchester United and Manchester City, is first in line as the Blues look to land him in the next few weeks.
It was thought that the Saints had no business in selling the youngster until at least the summer under Cortese. However this situation is likely to have changed with the Saints in complete turmoil.
Here in the tavern, we also expect to see renewed interest in England internationals Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana while West Ham United made a new move for Rickie Lambert last night as they look to capture the striker in the current transfer window.
Katharina Liebherr’s first main job in charge will seemingly be to persuade her manager and the club’s best players that their future still remains with the Saints. Any failure to do this could make for a very interesting period in the transfer market as vultures swoop on the club.
Shaw seemed to be content to remain a Saint. Will he be interested in departing now however? Let us know your thoughts below.
