Southampton eyeing up 23-year-old in bid to bolster attacking ranks – report

Southampton supporters have been reasonably satisfied in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side fight back to draw 1-1 with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, a result which moved them up to 11th place in the Premier League table.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with their South Coast rivals off the back of running Manchester City very close in a 2-1 defeat in midweek, yet fell behind to Eddie Howe’s side in the first half thanks to Ryan Fraser’s strike. However, the Saints hit back on the hour mark through Charlie Austin’s third goal in the space of seven days, yet they weren’t able to find that all important second and as such had to settle for a share of the spoils, albeit they did move up to 11th as a result of picking up their 17th point of the campaign.

Thus, there have been many upbeat Southampton supporters in the Tavern this week, several of whom are likely to be interested in a recent report from Blick, which suggests that the South Coast outfit are scouting Basel forward Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The 23-year-old made the move to the Swiss giants back in 2016 after impressing at Molde, and he has since gone from strength to strength by netting 15 goals and laying on an impressive 24 assists in just 63 games for Basel, five goals and 11 assists of which have come in his sensational start to this campaign.

And scouts from Southampton have reportedly been keeping a close eye on the Norway international’s progress in recent times, ahead of a possible move in the coming transfer windows.

And with Pellegrino’s side somewhat struggling in the final third this term, Elyounoussi could significantly bolster the ranks at St Mary’s as they seek a fifth successive top ten finish in the Premier League.

Landlord’s verdict: Southampton’s tally of 15 goals from their opening 15 Premier League games is fewer than all but one side above them in the league table, and as such manager Mauricio Pellegrino will surely be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements in January.

And one man the Saints chief has reportedly sent scouts to look at is Basel forward Mohamed Elyounoussi, who has scored five goals and laid on 11 assists in just 23 appearances for the club this term, including crucial contributions in their run to second place in Group A of the Champions League.

Thus, the Norway international is clearly making great strides at the Swiss giants and could be a perfect addition to Pellegrino’s Southampton squad, but with other clubs also thought to be keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, the Saints may have a battle on their hands landing the attacking sensation in the coming transfer windows.
