Southampton supporters have been pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side reach the fifth round of the FA Cup courtesy of a narrow 1-0 success over fellow Premier League outfit Watford on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men earned their place in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competition off the back of beating Fulham in the previous round, a victory which brought to an end a nine-match winless streak in all competitions. And although the Saints have since been unable to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, they at least have a cup run to enjoy as Jack Stephens’ goal after just four minutes was enough to see off the challenge of Javi Gracia’s Watford on Saturday, thus earning the South Coast outfit a trip to West Brom in the fifth round.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Saints fans in the Tavern in recent times, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Independent, which outlines a huge stumbling block in their side’s quest to bring Quincy Promes to St Mary’s this month.
The 26-year-old currently plays his trade for Russian side Spartak Moscow and has done so since 2014, in which time he has managed an impressive 58 goals in just 115 games for the club, helping them to the domestic title last season.
And with 15 goals and eight assists so far this term, the Netherlands international continues to go from strength to strength, and has unsurprisingly been attracting interest from around Europe with Pellegrino’s Southampton reportedly keen on his services.
However, recent reports disclose a huge stumbling block in a proposed deal to take Promes to St Mary’s, namely that his current club do not want to sell him.
But with Promes himself reportedly keen on a move to Southampton, it very much remains to be seen whether a deal will happen in the final 24 hours of the transfer window.
Landlord’s verdict: Guido Carrillo made the move to Southampton earlier this month as manager Mauricio Pellegrino sought to bolster his attacking ranks, and it appears that the Saints boss isn’t planning on stopping there.
Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes is another attacker the former Alaves chief reportedly wants at St Mary’s in the second half of the season, and no wonder given he has managed 58 goals in just 115 games for the Russian outfit, in turn helping them to the title last season.
However, the Saints face a battle as his current employers reportedly aren’t wanting to sell Promes this month, leaving the South Coast outfit with a race against time to get their man given that there are just 24 hours of the window remaining.
