Southampton fans cannot hide their excitement on Twitter after the club drew their arch-rivals Portsmouth in the Third Round of the League Cup.
The Saints will travel 16 miles to face Portsmouth in the local derby to play their first match against each other in over seven years.
Southampton and Portsmouth fans alike will now have the 24th of September firmly etched in their diaries.
The last time the two sides met was on April 7, 2012 when Pompey rescued a last-minute draw vs the Saints as David Norris scored in the 94th minute. Billy Sharp bagged a double for Southampton that day and Sunderland’s Chris Maguire – who scored against Pompey as recently as August 17 – was also on the scoresheet.
Portsmouth will feel like they have earned this tie after defeating two Championship sides on their way to this round. In the first, they beat Birmingham City at Fratton Park 3-0 and in the second they beat QPR 2-0 at Loftus Road.
Southampton have had just the one game to play in their lead up to this tie, beating Fulham at Craven Cottage 1-0.
Unsurprisingly, many Southampton fans were absolutely elated about the prospect of playing their oldest rivals in the cup – especially considering how long it has been.

Full strength for this one – no resting players. If you win one game, it's this one. Come on Saints!!
