Southampton: Fans lambast defence after getting turned over at Turf Moor - NON-NEWSNOW

Many Southampton fans have torn into their players and club on Twitter after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor.

Within 12 minutes Burnley scored three goals in the second half which means Southampton have finished the first game week in joint 18th.

An Ashley Barnes double was enough to sink Southampton, who despite having more possession and shots, were still not able to score.

Ralph Hasenhuttl handed a debut to summer signing Che Adams, who started alongside Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings in an attacking trio.

But it was Barnes who stole the show, and when Jannik Vestergaard made an absolute hash of a long ball from Erik Pieters, he hit a rocket with his right peg through the legs of Angus Gunn.

Not long later the two combined again and Barnes was able to volley home his second.

Within an instant, the then-even game gone. Johann Berg Gudmundsson bagged a third just five minutes later in the 75th to make it a horrible round trip for the men in red and white.

Southampton fans on Twitter could not process what they were seeing, and had no problem in tearing into their team on social media. One wrote: “Terrible result, terrible performance. Everybody knew that the central defence was abysmal. That will take some getting over.”
