Southampton fans on Twitter urge club to bring former manager back to St. Mary’s

Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are all breathing a collective sigh of relief, as Mauricio Pellegrino was given the boot yesterday following a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Newcastle. The St Mary’s faithful looked destined to go down under the Argentine, currently sitting in 17th and just one point off the drop. Now he’s been sacked, Saints fans have taken to Twitter and highlighted Gordon Strachan as the man they want.

The Saints who have been propping our bar up have been making note of the managers currently jobless as they look to see who’s capable of guiding the club away from relegation to the Championship. One name seems to be cropping up among a number of fans on the south coast – Gordon Strachan. Fans believe that the Scot has what it takes to pull the club up the table after he became available at the end of last year.

Strachan was in charge of Southampton 17 years ago when he took the reigns of the club in 2001. During his first spell in charge of the club, he guided the club to an 8th place finish and an FA Cup final in his most successful 2002/03 season, also qualifying for the UEFA Cup the following year. Whoever the Southampton board appoint, as long as the club retains it’s Premier League status into next season, the fans will be happy.
