Southampton fans on Twitter were disgusted to see Stephens’ start

Southampton fans had an eventful evening last night. Sadio Mane back in 2015 scored the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick as a Southampton player, and last night saw Shane Long score the fastest ever Premier League goal as they drew 1-1. However, before kick-off, the fans weren’t happy as Ralph Hasenhuttl opted to start Jack Stephens.

Jack Stephens, Southampton’s 25-year-old centre-back, hasn’t been in great form this season. Against Newcastle on Saturday he was hooked after just 45 minutes after having a mare against the Magpies. The Saints were going in at half-time 2-0 down and Stephens’ second-half absence saw Hasenhuttl’s side improve as they lost 3-1, drawing the second half 1-1.
Then yesterday, the fans saw that Stephens managed to retain his spot in the starting eleven and were far from happy. The versatile defender didn’t have the worst game last night, but before the kick-off, the reaction of the fans to his start would have made you believe that he was going to be banging in some own-goals and costing his side the game. As we know now, that didn’t happen, but the Saints were still fuming to see the 25-year-old start.
You can read the Saints’ verdict on Stephens’ start here:
wow they really kept Stephens in the side after the absolute debacle that happened on Saturday.
very bold strategy. can't wait to concede 6 because of his inability to defend.

The Saints aren’t at all happy that Stephens was starting yesterday and will be a lot happier if the Englishman doesn’t feature again next time out against Bournemouth.
