New Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has a big building job ahead of him at St Mary’s this summer and the pressure is on the new manager to build on last season’s slightly tame effort.
The Saints fans lining the bar here in the Tavern weren’t best impressed by what they saw under former manaager Claude Puel last season and the responsibility now lies with Pellegrino moving forward.
And a big part of his summer preparation will be bringing in some truly top class players and according to the Mirror, he’s pressing ahead for a move for Chelsea youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The new gaffer has identified Loftus-Cheek as a player that would add significant quality to his midfield and the Mirror also suggests that Newcastle are set to miss out on the player because of Southampton’s interest.
Loftus-Cheek has struggled to break into the Chelsea first-team for a number of years now and his future for the upcoming season looks to lie away from Stamford Bridge.
Fellow Chelsea youngsters Casey Palmer, Izzy Brown, Tammy Abraham and Nathanial Chalobah are also all expected to make moves away over the coming months as the competition hots up in Conte’s Chelsea first-team.
Loftus-Cheek remains extremely highly rated indeed but he needs to now start playing reguarly if he’s to fulfil the glittering reputation that was placed on his shoulders when he first broke into the first-team a couple of years ago.
