Our Southampton fans here in the Transfer Tavern have got big smiles on their faces today thanks to the report in The Daily Mail claiming that Liverpool will not go for Virgil Van Dijk in January.
The Saints by the bar have been worried in recent weeks that their Dutch defender was going to be their latest star to leave after hugely impressing this year, but it now looks as though he’ll be staying for the rest of the season at least.
The Reds had been linked with signing the powerful centre-half with our local Liverpool fans hoping for such a player with their current defensive issues, but they may have to look for another target for January now.
Van Dijk has been a mainstay in the Saints’ defence this season with 14 Premier League appearances and five in the Europa League as the club look to handle both competitions this year.
He’s formed a strong partnership with Jose Fonte at the back whilst our landlord is of the opinion that he has been the best central defender in the top flight this season.
Will Van Dijk be at the club for the long haul, Saints fans? Let us know below!
