The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern will always be quick to tell you over a pint of TT Ale, just how good forward Jay Rodriguez could have been if it were not for his torrid injury run.
Back in 2014 the former Burnley man was in the form of his life under Mauricio Pochettino and was all but on the plane to the World Cup in Brazil with Roy Hodgson’s England side until a horrific injury late in the season ruled him out for nearly a year.
On top of his first injury, a second long-term problem meant the 27-year-old went nearly two years without a solid run of first team football and is yet to find the form he was in before all the trouble three years ago.
With that in mind, his time at St. Mary’s looks limited with the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini all shining in the attacking roles.
According to reports from The Telegraph, though, there could be Premier League sanction for the £8.5m-rated man, with the Saints in talks with West Brom over a permanent deal this summer.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! Do you think it’s time for J-Rod to move on? Or should the new manager, whoever it is, give him another go? Let us know…
