With only one relegation spot left to fill, Southampton will know they are not quite out of the woods yet and will be cautiously looking over their shoulder at the teams around them in the Premier League.
Goals have been a problem for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this season, with Danny Ings having been the main man to try and find them, so adding another striker with a proven record in the top-flight might not be a bad idea.
And, it appears the Saints have one man on their radar ahead of the summer transfer window.
What’s the News?
Serbian media outlet Zurnal are claiming Southampton are just one of a number of clubs allegedly interested in Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic.
It is claimed they will face competition from the likes of Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, West Ham United and Guangzhou Evergrande.
The former Newcastle United forward has managed to find the back of the net on 10 occasions this season, which is more than any of the Saint’s current squad members.
Mitrovic could be an ideal signing for Southampton and be the type of player to help fans celebrate more often at the St Mary’s Stadium next season.
As mentioned, he has more goals than any other member of Hasnehuttl’s side, with Ings only having managed to bag seven so far this season, however, he could be an ideal partner for the Liverpool loanee in the next campaign – as the Saints are understood to have an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer.
The 24-year-old would have to be considered as an immediate upgrade on the likes of Shane Long and Charlie Austin, whilst he would also be able to offer the club a physical presence in the penalty box and act as a target man for crosses to be swung in from wide positions – something Southampton have been missing since selling Graziano Pelle in 2016.
With Fulham having been relegated from the Premier League, it is unlikely that he will be remaining at the club and the Saints could have the perfect opportunity to try and sign him, although they will have to still be in the top-flight to have any real chance of doing so.
Southampton fans, do you think Mitrovic could be the man to start finding the net for the Saints more often? Is he someone you think Hasenhuttl should do all he can to bring to the St. Mary’s Stadium? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
