Southampton fans here in the Tavern will be desperate for their side to improve this summer, as they avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Indeed, the Saints flirted with the possibility of relegation for large parts of the campaign but Mark Hughes did manage to ensure their safety, as he’ll now look to build for next season. And, it appears as if Southampton are already looking at potential additions, as according to Sun Sport, Southampton are preparing a move for Ben Gibson and are interested in Alfie Mawson.
Southampton are set to make a £20 million move for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson this summer.
The Englishman has been terrific for Boro this season but he did struggle to keep Aston Villa at bay in the Championship play-offs. Although, this won’t bother many of our local residents as this may have opened the door for a move to the Premier League.
And, it’s understood that the Saints are also interested in defender Alfie Mawson, who suffered relegation to the Championship this season.
Encouragingly, the Swansea City defender established himself as one of the best defenders in English football this season, so a move back to the Premier League would be just reward for his efforts.
Southampton struggled to keep the opposition at bay during the second half of the campaign, as the club still haven’t managed to find a suitable replacement for Virgil Van Dijk. Although, with Ben Gibson and Alfie Mawson now on the Saints’ radar, perhaps Southampton will finally be able to fill the huge defensive void.
