Southampton supporters have been more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side end a run of nine matches without a win by edging past Championship outfit Fulham 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men had prior to their trip to West London picked up just four points from a possible 27 in the Premier League, a run of form which has seen them slip to a place above the bottom three. However, the pressure has somewhat eased on the Saints boss as James Ward-Prowse’s effort 16 minutes before the break secured a narrow victory for the South Coast club on Saturday, thus earning them a spot in the last 32 and a home tie against fellow top-flight side Watford at the end of the month.
Consequently, there has been more positivity among our resident Southampton fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Ladbrokes, which suggests that their club are leading the chase for Bristol City forward Bobby Reid.
The 24-year-old came up through the ranks at Ashton Gate and has since gone on to make 137 appearances for the Robins, scoring 22 goals and laying on 14 assists along the way.
Yet this season has seen the Englishman take it up another level with 14 goals in just 31 games for Lee Johnson’s men, including in their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
And with Southampton seriously in need of more goals in the second half of the seaso, it’s a potentially crucial deal several of our resident Saints fans would like to see happen come January 31.
Landlord’s verdict: Bobby Reid has been in scintillating attacking form for Lee Johnson’s Bristol City this term, bagging 14 goals in just 31 games for the Robins, including two en route to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
And it appears that the 24-year-old has been attracting interest from some sides in the Premier League, with Ladbrokes listing Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton as the 7/4 favourites to secure his signature this month.
The Saints have managed just 21 goals in 22 league games this term, and with Charlie Austin set for a spell out with a hamstring tear, reinforcements in the attacking department are certainly needed this month.
And Reid could well be the man Pellegrino turns to as January wears on.
