Southampton linked with Joao Mario

Southampton have had a poor start to their Premier League campaign this season and if things do not improve quickly, they will surely be involved in another relegation scrap.

Mark Hughes took over at the Saints towards the backend of last year’s poor efforts and managed to steer them to safety with just one game to go.

However, it does not appear that the Welshman has quite worked out the formula to help get them firing and take them up the table and away from danger.

He made a number of signings in the summer, however, Danny Ings looks to have been the only one to have paid off so far, so it is likely he will look in the January transfer window for more options.

And, according to Calciomercato, Inter Milan’s Joao Mario could be a viable target for Southampton to target.

The Italian media outlet states that the Saints are interested in the midfielder, who has not featured for the Serie A outfit since returning from a loan spell with West Ham United last season.

However, it is understood a number of Premier League sides are believed to be interested, with the likes of Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City all keen.

The Nerazzurri outfit want to recoup the €40million they spent on him, however, they would be willing to loan him out first with an obligation to buy in the summer.

The Verdict:

Southampton certainly need to make improvements to their side in the winter if they are to have any chance of improving.

Mario could be an excellent addition to the side that has struggled and proved during his time at West Ham that he could be a real difference to the team alongside Mario Lemina or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, the fee that Inter Milan are thought to be demanding could be off-putting for the Saints, as it certainly would not be a cheap addition, and should they go down, he would prove to be a very expensive addition.
