Southampton: Many fans react to manager’s Pompey comments

Many Southampton fans have given their response to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s comments about their upcoming tie against rivals Portsmouth in the EFL Cup.

The Austrian manager spoke about the upcoming game saying how important he knew the game was for all of the fans.

On September 24, Southampton and Portsmouth will lock horns for the first time in over seven years.

The last time the two sides met was on April 7, 2012 when the two sides drew 2-2 after David Norris equalised in the final minute for Pompey.

Portsmouth will feel like they have earned this tie after defeating two Championship sides on their way to this round. In the first, they beat Birmingham City at Fratton Park 3-0 and in the second they beat QPR 2-0 at Loftus Road.

Southampton have had just the one game to play in their lead up to this tie, beating Fulham at Craven Cottage 1-0.

Hasenhuttl told the club website: “I know the history, and I know for our fans, it’s the only real south coast derby.”

Many Southampton fans loved what Hasenhuttl had to say about the match-up, with one calling him a legend, while others flooded the Southampton Twitter feed with memes in excitement before their big game.
