As often seen at this time of the year, a couple of Premier League giants could be about to go head-to-head in the transfer window for the same player.

And as of now, one of those players looks to be Southampton's Matt Targett, with TEAMtalk reporting that both Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in the 23-year-old.

Of all players, why Targett? That is a question a lot of supporters from both clubs are probably asking. The former England U21 international has hardly set the world alight at St. Mary's; there is no denying that.

However, take into account Targett's fair bit of experience in the Premier League, his homegrown status and the fact that he is not going to cost a fortune given he is Southampton's second choice left-back, and then you quickly find yourself asking why would Arsenal or Liverpool not be targeting the Saints youth product?

From their point of view, it could be a very smart piece of business, while Southampton have the chance to make a bit of profit.

Targett, however, should not rush into making any rash decisions if the Premier League powerhouses really are interested in his services.

At Liverpool, his game time, for instance, is almost certain to be limited, with the brilliant Andrew Robertson currently Jurgen Klopp's undisputed starter in the left-back position.

With Nacho Monreal now 33 years of age and Sead Kolasinac having not fully convinced, at Arsenal, he would undoubtedly have a much better chance.

But it still feels like a risky game, especially when you can see him breaking into Southampton's starting XI in the near future given Ryan Bertrand's age and injury problems last season as well as Targett starting the most amount of games compared to any other previous year.

The chance to play for a club like Liverpool or Arsenal does not come along too often, but Targett should be cautious about their true intentions if they come knocking. Is he going to be a regular starter or someone who is just there to help fill the homegrown quota?
