Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are slightly troubled at the prospect of losing their key player Virgil van Dijk.
Mauricio Pellegrino, a defender by trade, inherited one of the most coveted defenders in the Premier League when he was appointed Southampton manager. Virgil van Dijk is supposedly of interest to several top six sides this summer, having prospered during his time with the Saints.
His remarkable height ensures that he’s an imposing figure, however, he does exhibit great technical ability and composure which is uncharacteristic for a player of his stature. Additionally, he flaunts terrific aerial ability, and he can attack the ball well at either end of the pitch. The 26-year-old’s departure would significantly damage the quality of Pellegrino’s squad. Consequently, our landlord believes that the Saints will be unwilling to sell unless they receive a substantial fee.
If Southampton opt to sell their captain, they must be prepared to find replacements. Accordingly, our landlord has highlighted Arsenal star, and former player, Calum Chambers as one such replacement.
Despite making 59 appearances for the Gunners, the 22-year-old struggled to maintain a position in Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven. He spent the duration of last season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he thrived in an inferior team. The Englishman made 24 league appearances for Boro last season and displayed his strengths with several noteworthy performances.
Like Van Dijk, Chambers is composed in possession, proficient at winning aerial duels and he’s also a terrific passer of the ball. At the age of 22, he still has considerable room for improvement and having previously played for Southampton; he’s well-accustomed to the circumstances he’ll face on the south coast.
