Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are furious at the lack of transfer activity at St. Marys with the start of the season getting closer and closer.
The Saints narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship, securing safety on the final day of the Premier League season. Mauricio Pellegrino was replaced by Mark Hughes, and the Welshman impressed enough to earn a new long-term contract with the club. Hughes’ start to the transfer window hasn’t been great with their reported target, James Maddison, choosing to sign for Leicester.
Speculation have also surrounded Saints goalkeeper, Alex McCarthy. Reports suggest both Liverpool and Tottenham are keeping tabs on the Englishman as they look to bolster their goalkeeping ranks. With just one year remaining on his contract, it will be difficult to keep him at St. Marys.
If McCarthy leaves, Southampton will need to sign a new number one as Fraser Forster has been less than impressive in recent seasons. They could make a move for Liverpool stopper – Simon Mignolet. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Belgian has fallen out of favour at Anfield, losing his spot as Liverpool number one to Loris Karius.
Despite some inconsistent performances, the 30-year-old remains a top goalkeeper. His best form came at Sunderland; the Belgium international could rediscover his best form in an environment with less pressure. Liverpool are unlikely to demand a large fee for his services which could hand Southampton a great deal.
With plenty of Premier League and European experience, taking a risk on Mignolet could prove to be an astute piece of business.
