Southampton supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2003 courtesy of a 2-0 success over Wigan Athletic in the last eight.
Mark Hughes’ men had got past Fulham, Watford, and West Brom to reach the quarter-finals of the world’s oldest club competition, but faced a Wigan side who produced one of the biggest upsets of all time by beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the previous round. Yet the Saints got the job done at the DW Stadium on Sunday as second half goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares secured their passage through to the last four, where they will face Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley next month.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Star, which suggests that the South Coast outfit are interested in re-signing defender Luke Shaw from Manchester United this summer.
The 22-year-old made the move to Old Trafford back in 2014 after an impressive stint at St Mary’s but has found things tricky in the North West, with injury troubles and a seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho resulting in him making just 62 appearances for the club.
And his future was plunged into even greater doubt at the weekend following Mourinho’s scathing criticism of the left back, and as such reports suggest that the £13.5 million-rated outcast (as per Transfermarkt) is on Southampton’s radar ahead of a possible move this summer.
Obviously, much will depend on whether Hughes’ men can avoid relegation this season, but if they do manage to beat the drop, Shaw may well be interested in a return to a club where he played some of his best football earlier in his career.
Landlord’s verdict: Luke Shaw has struggled to make the desired impact since his move to Manchester United, and it appears that his future could well be away from Old Trafford after all.
And that’s because manager Jose Mourinho was hugely critical of the 22-year-old in his side’s 2-0 victory over Brighton on Saturday, with the England international taken off at half time to underline Mourinho’s frustrations.
Thus, his future has been plunged into doubt, and Mark Hughes’ Southampton are reportedly seeking to take advantage by eyeing up a move to bring the defender back to St Mary’s this summer, three-and-a-half years after he left for Old Trafford.
To have any chance of such move though, the Saints have to stay in the Premier League, but given how well Shaw played for the club between 2011 and 2014, the 22-year-old himself may well be interested in a return to the South Coast as he seeks to reignite his career.
