£9m-rated centre-back could be exactly what Southampton need to solve defensive crisis

The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are extremely relieved that their team managed to survive relegation by the skin of their teeth.

At one point it seemed certain that Southampton would be getting relegated this season but after winning their vital match against Swansea, they knew they had just done enough. A lot has gone wrong at St Mary’s this season but not replacing Virgil van Dijk was simply criminal and that has to be done this summer.

In his place, our punters believe that Ben Gibson, who is valued at £9 million by Transfer Markt, could be the perfect option to stop the leaking of goals.

Gibson is a regular at Middlesborough and after enjoying another successful season with Boro making 51 appearances, it may be time that the Englishman moves into the Premier League. Fantastic quality with the ball at his feet, solid in the air, great tackling – Gibson can do it all.

Southampton most definitely have the money to fund a transfer for Ben Gibson given that Liverpool surely paid big money for van Dijk in January. Those funds weren’t really spent before the window closed, and this left many fans extremely angry and it was a big reason as to why they found themselves in so much mess.

The Saints are a strong club and after finishing high-up in the Premier League over the last few seasons, maybe this season will act as the wake-up call they need? This means that Southampton could be in for an exciting few months of transfer activity should their owners finally realise that they need to splash the cash on top players who can improve their current team.

After recent performances, Ben Gibson has proven to be just that and Southampton need to seriously look at signing him this summer.
