Swansea City fans in the Transfer Tavern are pinning their club’s hopes of Premier League survival almost exclusively on talismanic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.
But they’re well aware that even if the Welsh side do stave off relegation, they’ll struggle to keep hold of the Iceland international this summer – with his suitors in the Premier League continually mounting up.
The 6 foot 1 star has been in phenomenal form this season, notching up eight goals and eleven assists despite his side spending the majority of the campaign wallowing in the drop zone.
According to The Daily Mail, Everton, Newcastle United and West Ham are all interested in signing the one-time Tottenham midfielder this summer; but they now face a new competitor for Sigurdsson’s services in the form of Premier League rivals Southampton.
The Liberty Stadium outfit reportedly value Sigurdsson at a whopping £35million, but their ability to command such a fee will likely be reduced if they drop down to the Championship.
The news has particularly disappointed West Ham fans in the Tavern, who view Sigurdsson as the perfect successor for January departure Dimitri Payet as Slaven Bilic’s chief creative entity.
Saints are currently four places higher than the Hammers in the Premier League table, although it’s unlikely either club will be able to offer Sigurdsson European football next season.
