Southampton made an uneventful start to the 2018/19 campaign against Burnley.
Mark Hughes’ new-look side could only manage a goalless draw against the Clarets at St. Marys. Saints fans will be pleased to see Danny Ings look good after leaving the bench following his loan move from Liverpool. They will be hoping the forward can bag his first goal for the club against Liverpool’s rivals Everton at the weekend.
The former Burnley man was Hughes’ final signing before the transfer window slammed shut. The Saints spent big money to improve their squad and avoid another relegation battle. The window may be closed, but Southampton could still add to their ranks in the free agent market.
One man they should consider signing is French playmaker – Hatem Ben Arfa. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the midfielder is without a club after his contract expired at Paris St Germain. Ben Arfa is no stranger to the Premier League following spells in England with Newcastle United and Hull City.
The 31-year-old didn’t have the best reputation on English shores but rediscovered his best form in France with Nice. He scored an incredible 17 goals and notched six assists back in 2016 to earn his move to PSG. If he can replicate that form in the Premier League, Southampton would have pulled off a masterstroke.
With silky dribbling skills and an eye for goal, linking Ben Arfa with Ings in the attack could be deadly. The former France international can also play out wide giving Hughes valuable cover on the flanks. Available for nothing, this one should be a no-brainer.
Southampton fans, thoughts?
